Next up, a giant thank you to everyone who attended this event.  I am always surprised at just how many people come out to learn about SharePoint. And I am humbled every time someone comes to hear me speak.

At SharePoint Saturday the Conference – DC I was able to present a full day workshop: SharePoint Branding 101.  This workshop was exciting for me to try and fit in as much branding goodness into 6 hours as I could.  It was certainly a challenge.

During the day we discussed a full range of topics from Requirements Gathering for Branding all the way through to Implementation and Deployment of Features.

Now that we have all had a moment to take a breath and recover a bit from this very full day of branding learning. I wanted to post out a few things for you.  First up are the slides from the presentation.  Hopefully they will help some of you out as you approach projects in the future. (Thanks for the feedback from a few of you I helped already, it certainly makes me happy to share)

Next on the schedule is the SharePoint Connections Conference in Orlando, FL. This conference is action packed and starts on March 27 and runs until March 30th. While at this conference I will be speaking about SharePoint 2010 branding and how to successfully plan for a design project.

Just one short week after the Connections Conference I head off to London for the Best Practices UK Conference.  I’m really hoping for no Ash Cloud this year and that I actually make it to London.

Secondly I have been on the road already this year teaching the second session of the new Mindsharp SharePoint Designer 2010 course.  Next up I venture to the frozen tundra of the northern states. But those snow boots I bought sure did come in handy as I was frozen in Atlanta this last week.

Oh and if you are wondering where you can find me soon… Well I will be speaking at the Best Practices Conference 2011 in La Jolla, California. Then I will be off to the Connections Conference in Orlando, Florida. And finally over to the Best Practices Conference in the UK in London, England.

I am excited to have been accepted as a speaker for the Best Practices Conference in August. This time there will be no ash cloud from speaking at my first major conference!

After all DC is a driveable distance from Alabama!!! I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am to participate in this event.

 If you get the opportunity to either attend or present at one of the SharePoint Saturday events, I highly encourage you to do so.  The events really are a great way to meet other people working with SharePoint and to ask questions and even just learn how others are using the product.

This time around, I again gave a new presentation.  This one was a 2010 SharePoint branding presentation all about how I think that some of the new branding components will allow end users to become more empowered and take ownership of their sites. 

This was a first stab at this presentation and I got lots of great feedback from other speakers as well as attendees about changes that I will be making to the presentation as I go forward.

So, you want to know about the event?  Well, I will tell you a little bit about my trip and the great time that I had in Kansas City (MO and KS).

On Friday I made it to Kansas City and was lucky that Joy Earles (@joyknows) came to pick me up at the airport. (Thanks Joy!!!)  We made our way to the hotel and checked in.  With just a short time before the speaker dinner it was great to spend some time with Mark Rackley (@mrackley).  Then it was on to the speaker dinner.

This was a great feast in the hotel.  There were so many new speakers for me to meet.  And I was excited to see some familiar faces.  After this great meal, it was time for an adventure.  I always like going on local adventures while in the town. 

This time, I was glad to see some other adventurers in the group.  So it was time for our little group to head out.  The group was Joel Oleson (@joeloleson), Eric Harlan (@ericharlan), Mark Rackley and myself. 

What would our first stop be? If any of you follow Joel’s many adventures on twitter you would know that this past week he was also in St. Louis.  He wanted to compare St. Louis Barbecue to Kansas City Barbecue.   So we were off on our search for some BBQ in Kansas City that was still open late. (You see it was after 8 when we left our hotel on this adventure.)

We ended up at Oklahoma Joe’s.  This was a great experience and it turns out that it was featured by Anthony Bourdain’s 13 Places to Eat Before You Die article in Men’s Health Magazine. We ordered 2 different combo plates (recommended by the waitress).

This is the combo meal with the Beef Brisket. We also chose the potato salad and the spicy coleslaw to go along with it.	This is the pork combo meal. We got their famous pulled pork and the best in Kansas City French Fries with this combo.
That is a lot of food on the table. See even Eric agrees.	See, I was there. The waitress took the group picture for us. But Joel and Eric were making faces. I'm surprised that I don't have bunny ears.
This is the rest of the store. You can see they were ready for us to leave	We were all trying to figure out where we were going next. I'm pretty sure Eric was telling them that Joel was the driver.

So that was our first adventure of the night.  You might think that it was enough already with eating two meals, but we needed to go find some other fun in Kansas City.  So we were off again.  After a tour of some of the holiday lights in the town, we headed down to Independence, MO to see a temple that has some really neat architecture.  It was too dark for the pictures to turn out.  But it was nice to see it.

After that adventure we were off to the Power and Light District for a little time out on the town.  We went to a club called “PBR Big Sky.”  It was a lot of fun.  The band was good, not too country for the city boys with us.   I kept waiting for Joel to jump on the mechanical bull and go for a ride, but it didn’t happen. 

At the end of Friday night, I felt like I had already been on an adventure.  The next day was the event and it was sure to be a great one.

And then on Sunday we got to do another couple of unique to Kansas City experiences.  Eric Harlan, Joy Earles, Becky Isserman, John Ennion and I went to lunch.  We went to one of Becky and John’s favorite restaurants for lunch.  Then some of us went on to Boulevard Brewery for a tour.  It was a lot of fun. 

After this it was time for me to head home.  It was a great trip and I really have enjoyed spending time in each different SharePoint Saturday city this year.

I’m looking forward to this conference a lot.  I will also get to check off one more place on my list of places to visit.

They are such a good way for me to connect with people in the SharePoint world and to meet other speakers. 

This event was really nice as it offered us beautiful waterfront views out of the conference rooms.  It was such a nice day that it was a little distracting to present.  But I managed to avoid running out to the beach and stay inside and learn lots of new things and even give my own presentation.

After Tampa, I am going to be participating in SharePoint Saturday in Phoenix, AZ on November 21st.  

This next week is Thanksgiving and I will be travelling to spend time with my family in Mobile, AL.

Then I am off to SharePoint Saturday DC/Northern Virginia on December 5th.

After that is SharePoint Saturday Kansas City on December 12th.

Wow, it looks like I am going to be quite busy in the next few months with lots of SharePointand lots of great information to share with everyone.

I imagine that at some point in all of this that I will be posting some new blog posts on SharePoint 2010 branding.  At least that is my goal.  I am also working on a SharePoint2010 book with a group of people, which is great as well.

I’m always open to any questions or topics that you would like to see me present.  So leave me a comment on my blog if you have any suggestions for me.

What I didn’t expect was the complete, almost overwhelming feeling of being in such a social situation with so many other SharePoint enthusiasts. There were over 7,000 people attending the SharePoint Conference this year. And starting from day 1, we were all excited to be around each other and to try and learn as much as we could from each other in such a short period of time.

I’m going to try and recap what I experienced in being here at the conference.

I got into Las Vegas on Saturday, October 17th.  I wanted to come to town early and experience at least one of the shows on the strip before all the SharePoint started.  So on Saturday when I arrived mid afternoon, I went to the Luxor and checked in.  I then promptly went down to the Luxor pool.  It was so relaxing to leave home and hit a warmer town where I could hang out at the pool again. (okay so I live in Alabama and had been at the pool 2 weeks prior, but it was a chilly 42 degrees F when I left Birmingham that morning)

At the pool, I met up with some of the other SharePoint people who had come to town early. After this I was off to see “O” by Cirque de Soliel at the Bellagio.  So I hopped in a cab and off I went to the Bellagio.  Wow, this show was great.  I really enjoyed it and highly recommend it to anyone who wants to go to a great show in Vegas.  I really loved the mix of circus with water! After the show I headed back to the Luxor to hang with a crew at the bar.

On Sunday we started off the Conference with registration and of course the SharePint event.  There were lots of people there and lots of twitter shirts out in the crowd.  It is so nice when people introduce themselves with their real name and their twitter name.  For those of us who have twitter names that aren’t our real names it is sometimes hard for people to know our actual names. 

On Monday morning, you could feel the excitement for the keynote speeches to start and for the NDA to be lifted on SharePoint 2010. In the main ballroom, people were excited, and even some dancing in the ailses.  What a fun time that was!  The keynote kicked off and the NDA was lifted.  We killed twitter several times throughout the keynote with all the SPC09 tweets.

The rest of the Monday was filled with Overview sessions on all kinds of 2010 topics. I have to say, there were so many wonderful sessions at SPC09 that I had a really hard time picking which ones to attend.  I attended several sessions on Monday, but I won’t go into detail about them.

While at me, it was pleased to be a part of the EndUserSharePoint live blogging team.  Our goal in doing live blogging at these conferences is to give people who can’t attend in person a look into what is being discussed at the conference.  We had a great group of live bloggers this time around. It was a bit of a challenge for us this time with no designated plugs for our laptops in the session rooms, but we did what we could.

Each day  we followed the same schedule, Breakfast, Sessions, Lunch, Sessions, Break, Sessions. I will say that I got quite the workout while at the conference.  The walk from the Luxor to the Conference Center at Mandalay was 1 1/2 miles each way, plus all the additional walking that we did to attend session spread out among 3 floors. It makes me tired just thinking about it and my feet are going to be sore for weeks I think.

Wednesday night was the big conference event with the 80’s Beach Party.  I was sad that I couldn’t stay at this party, but with the stress fractures I had in my foot earlier this year, I can’t walk in sand.  But I did make a quick appearance and got to see Huey Lewis and the News perform the Power of Love.

It was fun to have a birthday at the SharePoint conference and mine was Thursday. I want to thank everyone for the birthday wishes and to everyone who helped me celebrate my birthday! I told people that it was my birthday and I would SharePoint if I wanted to.  I couldn’t have picked a better location or a better group of people to celebrate with.

Withthe official conference ending on Thursday, it was time to say goodbye to some of my friends both old and new.  I was lucky enough to attend the post conference sessions, so my time in Vegas was not over.  I spent Friday with Todd Klindtand Shane Young in their install and Upgrade session.  Then after I headed out for one last night on the town.

Over all this was a completely overwhelming conference, my feet hurt, I’m tired, and my brain is full of SharePoint 2010.  But I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.

I met so many people to even mention them by name, but I want you all to know that I enjoyed meeting you all and that I hope to continue to meet new people everywhere I go.

So first off, back in September I was lucky enough to give my Branding 101 session at sharePoint Saturday New York City. Boy that was a fun trip. I had a blast taking my mother with me early for her first visit to one of my favorite cities.

We took in the sites and even managed to see Wicked and Mamma Mia and fit in some shopping during our visit.

Then it was time for SharePoint Saturday. I had a great session, thanks to everyone who attended. I’m going to try later today to post my session slides as well. I had a great time in NYC and even made some new friends.

After my NYC trip I have been at home busy trying to get ready to learn as much about SharePoint 2010 as I can. This involved clearing my plate of many tasks I hadn’t yet completed.

Next my focus turned to the Birmingham SharePoint community. I have been working on building more community spirit. In this vein, I spoke along with Lori Gowin and Laura Rogers at the TechBirmingham TechMixwr University this past week. We got to build more interest in the Bham SPUG just by participating and getting the opportunity to meet new people.

At this event I gave my SharePoint Branding 101 talk, this one is so popular. I also gave a session on SharePoint search concepts.

Later that evening it was the Bham SPUG’s first birthday! This last year has really flown by. I am so lucky to have a great support system in Lori and Laura. Also to have the support of New Horizons as our venue sponsor. Thanks to everyone who has spoken, helped spread the word, or participated in our little SPUG!!

So as you can see the last couple of months have been busy. Just the way I like them. Up next for me is lots of 2010 learning, some writing, and some more travelling. This next week is Las Vegas for the big conference.
